Suitable for: School psychologists, teachers, education assistants, school administrators, learning support coordinators, school chaplains, counselors, parents, allied health professionals, pre-service educators, anyone supporting a child with ASD who experiences feelings of Anxiety. This workshop is most relevant for students attending a mainstream school in Years 1-12 and who do not have an intellectual disability.

Workshop Summary: This workshop comprises two presentations and a planning session. A comprehensive workbook, copies of presentation material and a light lunch are included in the registration price.

The first presentation relates to Autism Spectrum Disorder, and highlights the neurological reasons for feelings of Anxiety occurring more frequently in students with ASD. The latest research findings will be integrated throughout the session, which will focus on practical ways to implement a three-part approach to help these students reach their potential: how to lower the cognitive load, how to identify and increase effective strategies, and how to explicitly teach skills to enable social thinking.

The second presentation aims to increase the participants’ repertoire of whole class, group and individual activities to overcome anxious and negative thoughts and feelings. The proactive and reactive strategies discussed are designed for immediate implementation in the classroom. Attendants will be provided with lesson plan ideas for teaching children to focus on their 'current situation' instead of dwelling on past situations or worrying about possible future scenarios. They will also be equipped with a decision making formula to demonstrate to children that they have certain positive choices available if something does 'go wrong'.
