How do I pay for consumables?

Self-managed

Buy from any shop or provider then claim the money from your plan through the NDIS participant portal or app. You aren’t bound by the price limits, but you must follow the self-management rules and keep receipts for 5 years.

Your guide to self-management

Plan-managed

Your plan manager pays the provider or pays you back. You can buy from registered or unregistered providers, and price limits apply.

Agency-managed

You must use a registered NDIS provider, who claims from your plan. Price limits apply.

Low-cost assistive technology

Everyday equipment under $1,500 that helps because of disability.

Low-cost AT is equipment that costs less than $1,500 per item. It is usually funded from the Consumables budget. Most participants can buy it themselves, from any shop, without a quote. More expensive equipment is funded from the Capital budget and usually needs a quote.

Pick the item number for what the equipment helps with (communication, personal care, mobility and so on), not for where you bought it.
Low-cost repairs to equipment outside its warranty are usually paid from low-cost AT too.

Continence

Pads, pull-ups, bed protection, alarms and other continence supplies.

Continence products are funded when they are needed because of disability. Continence needs should be reassessed at least every three years, or sooner after problems like urinary tract infections, so the products stay right for the person.

Toilet-training alarms and timers are listed under continence alarms.

Eating and drinking (tube feeding)

Home enteral nutrition (HEN): pumps, syringes, giving sets and other tube-feeding supplies.

Home enteral nutrition (HEN) is feeding through a tube. The equipment is funded based on an assessment by a qualified professional, such as a dietitian. Most HEN items are funded as a yearly amount.

Feeding pumps are often lent free of charge; the funding covers the supplies that go with them.

Pump and accessories for people who also syringe feed: gastrostomy devices, extension sets, giving sets, containers and syringes (yearly amount).

Disability-related health supplies

Health consumables needed because of disability, plus delivery and set-up.

These items cover health-related supplies that are needed because of a person's disability. They are funded based on an assessment by a qualified professional. Larger health equipment, such as ventilators, is funded from the Capital budget instead. Rapid antigen tests and personal protective equipment (PPE) are included here when they are needed because of disability.

Delivery can only be claimed together with the item being delivered, never on its own.

If a participant has an assistance animal funded by the NDIS, its ongoing running costs are claimed from Consumables.

Interpreting and translating

Language interpreting, and Auslan or Signed English training.

Registered NDIS providers can book spoken-language interpreters through TIS National, and the NDIS pays for it. It does not come out of the participant's plan. Auslan interpreting can be included in a participant's plan.

There is no set price limit for these items. The price is agreed with the provider.

Good to know

“Actual cost” items have no price limit. They are claimed in $1 units, so a $64.95 purchase is claimed as 64.95 units.
Subscriptions are allowed for consumables, up to $5,000 a year. They are usually charged monthly, and you can cancel with one month’s notice without an exit fee.
No extra fees: registered providers can’t add credit card surcharges, “gap” fees or late payment fees unless the NDIS pricing rules allow them.
Your choice: if you want an extra feature that isn’t reasonable and necessary, such as a nicer look, you pay the difference yourself.
Equipment over $1,500 is funded from the Capital budget, usually with a quote. Search for it in the NDIS Price Guide Navigator.
